M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival 2019 - 2020

Message from M1 Limited

M1 is delighted to be presenting the M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival 2020!

This year's Festival theme touches on ‘Disability', a condition that oftentimes, carries an unfortunate stigma within our society, bundled with misconception, ignorance and common prejudicial judgement.

We are heartened that the Artistic Director, Jean Ng and the team at ArtsWok Collaborative has decided to embark on ‘Disability'; working with youth participants from Dunman High School and Tanjong Katong Girls' School over an 18-months research and creation process to devise original plays. It is also encouraging that youths from Republic Polytechnic School of Technology for the Arts has been creating work annually for children and youth on the autism spectrum and neuro-diverse audiences, and we are glad they are participating in the festival. We are also looking forward to the festival-commissioned piece by well-known theatre practitioners, Kuo Jing Hong, with assistant direction by Tan Beng Tian that will be performed by a full cast of differently-abled performers.

M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival embodies ‘youth theatre with a social conscience' and seeks to nurture the next generation of civic and cultural leaders. Through this unique platform, we hope that our young people are encouraged to reflect deeply on current realities, inspiring them to think critically, and communicate their unique perspectives on relevant social issues.

In broaching the social issue of ‘Disability', we hope to bridge differences perceived by society and encourage inclusivity and acceptance within our community.

Esplanade is Singapore's national performing arts centre. It has a year-round line-up of about 3,500 performances presented by Esplanade, its partners and hirers. As an arts centre for everyone, Esplanade also creates opportunities for seniors, youth, children and underserved communities to experience the arts. More than 70% of the shows that take place each year at the centre are non-ticketed. The centre works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities and content, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. Esplanade supports the creation of artistic content by commissioning and producing new Singapore and Asian work for the international stage. It also develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally.

To bring even more of the arts to a wider audience and provide more platforms to support Singapore's next generation of artists, Esplanade is building a new theatre along its busy waterfront. Named Singtel Waterfront Theatre, the 550-seat venue will open in 2021.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is operated by The Esplanade Co Ltd (TECL), which is a not-for-profit organisation, a registered Charity and an Institution of a Public Character. The Charity Council awarded TECL the Charity Governance Award – Special Commendation for Clarity of Strategy in 2016, and the Charity Transparency Award for four consecutive years since 2016.

TECL receives funding support from Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and its Community Programmes are supported by Tote Board Family, comprising Tote Board, Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club.
