In this special series of devising workshops, presenting groups share insights from their research process on the theme of poverty. Workshop participants get to reflect and contribute to the dialogue in a creative and experiential way, through a range of stimuli such as everyday objects, music and visual art, while picking up devising techniques facilitated by professional drama practitioners.

Devising Theatre Through Objects

Facilitated by: Renee Chua & Anderson Secondary School

Participants will:
  • Use everyday objects as stimuli to devise theatre
  • Explore the significance of everyday objects in the context of poverty
  • Learn how to use objects to create identities, characters, relationships and scenes to tell a story

Devising Theatre Through Music

Facilitated by: Rizman Putra & Beyond Social Services Community Theatre Group

Participants will:
  • Use different genres of music as stimuli to devise theatre
  • Integrate music and image to generate meaning and a sense of “drama”
  • Explore how music creates structure, conveys emotion and enhances storytelling

Devising Theatre Through Visual Art

Facilitated by: Iris Chia & Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road)

  • Use local artworks as stimuli to devise theatre
  • Bring a critical lens to understanding local narratives about poverty
