ARTSWOK COLLABORATIVE

ArtsWok Collaborative is an arts-based community development organisation that connects communities by harnessing the power of the arts to create dialogue, invite social participation and build bridges across difference. We work with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement community-based arts projects, facilitate learning and exchanges through a community of practice, build capacity of practitioners through an action learning-incubator programme as well as conduct research and advocacy in the field of arts-based community development.

 

ArtsWok Collaborative Limited is a recipient of the National Arts Council’s Seed Grant for the period from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2018.

ALVIN TAN

Artistic Director

 

Alvin is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage and a leading proponent of devising theatre in Singapore, having directed more than 60 plays which have been staged locally and at international festivals.  In 2010, Alvin was conferred the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, in recognition of his significant contribution to the arts. He was on the board of the National Arts Council from 2013 to 2015 and was invited by the Ministry of Education to design a drama syllabus at ‘O’ level for implementation in schools. In 2014, Alvin was conferred the Cultural Medallion for his artistic excellence and contribution to Singapore’s arts and cultural landscape.

JASON NG

Production Stage Manager and Mentor

 

Jason Ng graduated from NUS as a Theatre Studies major in 2006. After 7 years of experience in the field of corporate events management and the secondary school classroom, Jason returned home to theatre in 2013, reinventing himself as a Production Stage Manager, Writer, Designer, Director and Educator. Jason’s production credits include Revolutionary Model Play 2.0 at 2015’s Singapore International Festival of the Arts, Poor Thing, Gitanjali (I Feel The Earth Move) and Rise Of The Phoenix by The Necessary Stage, and Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral by Jeff Chen.  Jason believes that theatre, as an explorative platform for youths, brings an unstoppable potential for young minds to discover the world, and themselves, where youths can encounter the power of invention, the magic of collaboration, and the inspiration for creation.

CLARISSE NG

Production Stage Manager

 

Clarisse Ng  was the Production/Technical Manager of The Necessary Stage (TNS) for seven years, where she worked on landmark productions such as Still Building, Off Centre and Rosnah.  Through her work with the volunteers at TNS and the members of its Theatre For Youth Ensemble, she discovered a capacity for working with young people.  To develop this newfound ability, she switched career paths and taught at a neighbourhood school for fifteen years, serving variously as Head of Department (English Language) and Level Head (Pupil Development). Having returned to the arts scene in 2016, Clarisse remains an educator at heart.  She sees her life work as facilitating the art-making process, encouraging and supporting independent and emerging art-makers, and enabling conversations about the arts.  She is currently working on a project basis with newly launched performance collective, Akulah Bimbo Sakti, as Production/Stage Manager.
