Introduction to Devising Workshop -

Timing: Sat 22 & Sun 23 July, 2 - 6pm
Venue: Esplanade Annexe Studio
A not-to-be-missed opportunity to experience The Necessary Stage's (TNS) unique devising methodology, with main facilitation by Haresh Sharma.
Characters and relationships are key to TNS’ signature works – indigenous, intercultural, character-driven and issue-based. The facilitators will share their distinctive creative process, honed through the creation of numerous important works such as Off Centre, Fundamentally Happy and Gemuk Girls. Award-winning actors Siti Khalijah Zainal and Dwayne Lau will be making special appearances to share their experiences on devising work.
Participants will: • Create characters from a series of individual and group improvisational exercises • Come up with scenarios, use tableaux and write scenes based on their improvised charactersThis workshop is for: • Participants 16 - 35 years old • Youths interested in using the devising process to create new work • Playwrights exploring the processes of character and scene development

Wed 2 Aug,7.30 - 9.30pm EsplanadeRecital Studio (featuring UNSAID) MY MOTHER SAYART NO $$$$$ In this roundtable, socially minded arts collective UNSAID shares its vision of transforming untold narratives of Singapore into meaningful and engaging works of art. How can more youths get involved in performing arts as a career and what does it take to be sustainable over thelong run? Facilitated by Oniatta Effendi, arts practitioner and drama educator Please note that this session will be video recorded for public screening. Thu 3 Aug,5.30pm - 7.30pm Open Stage, library@esplanade (featuring DownSyndrome Association) HOLDING SPACEFOR THE OTHER A rare opportunity to investigate the unique process of devising and staging a work on a complex issue involving actors with special needs. Hear from veteran theatre practitioners and drama educators, Jean Ng and Julius Foo who have worked with DSA for the past 15 years, honing their creative approaches and contributing towards the development of these youths. Facilitated by Sean Tobin, Artistic Director of M1 Fringe Festival Sat 5 Aug,1- 3pm EsplanadeAnnexe Studio (featuring allfestival groups) STAGINGSOCIAL ISSUES Engage with theatre artists from the festival participating groups as they discuss how their theatre-making integrates artistry with social consciousness. Listen to their stories about how they grapple with tough choices when negotiating ethical and aesthetic questions in relation to Art and Society.
